The Day Eric Clapton Gave Jeff Beck Valuable Advice About Not Enjoying Singing

During an interview with Total Guitar in 2016 (rescued by Showbiz Cheat Sheet), Beck made a great retrospective about his career – and recalled how he found difficulties in the musical process, until Clapton revolutionize the way he thought as an artist.

“It’s so hard because I didn’t sing,” he stated in the conversation. “Eric said, and they were words of great wisdom: ‘Get used to the fact that you hate your voice, because I do.’ And I replied: ‘But you look good, I look unbearably bad. I hate it. I would never like it even if we had another single like ‘Hi Ho Silver Lining,’ I just couldn’t take it.'”

“He explained, ‘I’m telling you, if you don’t do this, it will be difficult.’ And it was hard, but then I can turn around and say, ‘Blow By Blow [disco de 1975], put that in your pipe and smoke it, man.’ But he’s right, if I made up a song and everyone loved it, it would automatically instill confidence and I might even like the way it sounded, but letting it out is more than I can take.”
