Lollapalooza 2023: Hot Milk taps into the emo energy of decades past

The British band has few hits known to the general public, but has made a lively presentation for those who enjoy the style

The band Warm milk took the stage Adidas of Lollapalooza 2023 in the late afternoon of this Friday 24, with members who focus more on emo energy and interaction with the audience than on vocal and instrumental techniques. Those who attended or watched on TV heard songs or lyrics reminiscent of hit bands from decades past such as Paramore, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance or Simple Plan.

Coming from Manchester (the British accent was evident in some lines), they haven’t released any albums yet – which in times of streaming doesn’t prevent them from having around 400,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, for example.

Singer Han Mee jumped and lay down on stage, as well as descending into the crowd at one point, accompanied by male vocals, Jim Shaw. Introducing one of the group’s latest songs, Mee asked, “I need you to pretend this is your favorite song of all time.”

The emo theme was also visible in Hot Milk’s lyrics. “I think I hate myself, no one else/And all my daydreams send me to hell/And all my friends are gone again/Is it real or is it in my head?” says one. Something like, “I think I hate myself, no one else / And all my daydreams send me to hell / And all my friends have left me again / Is it real or is it in my head?”.
