LOL Qui Rit Sort: A very popular season 3
Airing from 2021 in France, LOL: Whoever laughs, gets out! is the adaptation of a Japanese reality show titled Hitoshi Matsumoto presents the documentary released in 2016. The principle is simple: ten guests are gathered in a loft for six hours, and whoever manages not to laugh at the end of these six hours will win the game. everything is ready to push the participants to the limit. Therefore, each candidate will do his best to make his fellows laugh, using multiple ploys to achieve his ends.
Also presented by Philippe Lacheau, the third season of the show broadcast this month has broken all records. Thus, it became the most watched program of Prime Video in France, all formats combined. It must be said that the streaming platform had put together the casting package in front of the cameras Leïla Bekhti, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Géraldine Nakache, Laura Felpin, Virginie Efira, Gad Elmaleh, Pierre Niney, Jonathan Cohen, Paul Mirabel and François Damiens.
These ten fanatics have offered us some moments of the anthology. Especially when Pierre Niney undertook an imitation of Thomas Pesquet that we never tire of seeing again:
Behind the scenes revealed
In a long interview given to our colleagues of You combineGuiguipop, one of the authors of LOL: Whoever laughs, gets out! lifted the veil several mysteries from the hit show. Especially in this very popular season 3.
He thus answered the question that many viewers asked themselves in front of the show: are the jokes written in advance? Well the answer is yes! She confided thus:
You can’t tell people, ‘Let’s go! Be funny!’ It does not work like that. They must have a backup of the valves (…)
Once the lines are written, the writers pitch them to the actors, who provide feedback and edits. Of course, there is also a a lot of improvisation, especially in this season 3 where most of the participants know each other well, such as Jonathan Cohen and Pierre Niney. The authors intervene primarily on the jokers of the participants. They submit their ideas to them and the discussions lead to the delirious sketches we see on the screen.

Lots of cut out moments
If the game is supposed to last six hours, the shooting is much longer. Therefore, many sketches and jokes were cut during editing. Written sketches also could not be shown, such as Gad Elmaleh’s joker (was deleted before), or the surprise return of Gérard Darmon (who had participated in season 2). Indeed, the latter was to return… as a Paul Mirabel impersonator:
We thought it would be too much fun for him to go back in disguise as a Paul Mirabel lookalike. Everyone had to play along and take him for Paul. He might as well have made a joker and played a song (…)
Finally, Gérard Darmon was not available. However, the song in question was saved for one last joker, but was cut during editing…
Underrated candidates
Guiguipop, who has seen all the rushes of the show, is categorical: Pierre Niney was indeed the most impressive candidateas he told Konbini:
On the set he had crazy energy, the others said so at the end. He puts in hours and hours of shooting and never seems to get tired. Even during the cuts, when the others were being rinsed, she would say: “Come on, let’s continue, it’s too funny, let’s continue.” It’s also the gang of friends effect. You are with your friends on a mission, it is lucky for them. Frankly, I found it exemplary. She did improv after improv, they were all fun.
However, he regrets that the editing has not paid more homage to Gad Elmaleh, or to Paul Mirabel, who much more given than we see in the final cut. As for the second (and finalist), he also defended him after being heavily criticized by viewers:
I think it’s too expensive for its performance. Many people say he’s not funny, he never laughs. But that’s the game! He also said off the record: ‘At some point, I have the right to win’ (…) He’s the youngest, he’s coming, there’s Gad Elmaleh, François Damiens, Jonathan Cohen… people are tough with him.
Given the huge success of the third season of LOL: Whoever laughs, gets out! there’s a good chance Prime Video will reveal cut scenes from the show in the coming days.
