Son of Led Zeppelin drummer Jason Bonham found box of unlabeled tapes
jason bonhamson of the drummer of Led Zeppelin, John Bonhammay have found unreleased tapes of the band’s recordings in a box belonging to his father.
jason revealed on the podcast The Vinyl Guide (via Ultimate Classic Rock): “Believe it or not, my dad didn’t like playing at home at all. He didn’t even have recording equipment. Just a two-track Revox, which was just for playing the mixes when he got back from the studio.”
The surprise came when revisiting the house where they lived: “I found a box full of tapes the last time I was home. But I need a machine to check if it’s still working. I’ll save this to show on YouTube: ‘Let’s put this on to work. See if we can find something that was never released.'”
The tapes did not come with a label, which, for bonham, is the “best part.” His only concern, however, is the possible deterioration of the material, which has been stored for many years. “By putting it in the machine, it can just erase the tapes as soon as I hit play.”
Taking the tapes to heat is one of the options to seek to preserve the content. jason recalled that the tracks recorded by the band in knebworth went through this process.
