Metallica: 40 years ago, Dave Mustaine was kicked out of the band

Decision came from James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich due to Dave Mustaine’s excessive alcohol use and other confusions with the band members

40 years ago, on April 11, 1983, Dave Mustaine was woken up suddenly and told about his resignation from the metallica. The decision came from the leader of the heavy metal band, James Hetfieldit’s from Lars Ulrichdue to Mustaine’s behavior – marked by many fights, disagreements and the musician’s excessive use of alcohol in the period in which he was part of the group, from 1981 to 1983. At the time, the band was formed by Hetfield, Ulrich, Cliff Burton and by Mustaine who would end up replaced by Kirk Hammett.

It took Mustaine some time to understand the decision that led to his resignation. In an interview with the British magazine Kerrang in 2021, the musician showed heartache with the choice made by his former bandmates. At the time, he commented that he would have liked to have won a second chance:

“It’s almost like it all happened to someone else. I’ve grown a lot since then. Sometimes it takes time to process what happened, to see your part in it. Because I had a part in it… I was definitely dangerous back then,” she assumed.

“I understand why they didn’t want to take a chance on me when there was so much going on in Metallica. But at the time, I wish I had been given a second chance. Just, like, someone saying, ‘Hey Dave, you’re drinking too much, and please stop punching the singer in the face!’ I probably would have been fine with that.”

Life after Metallica

In the same year of his departure from Metallica, Mustaine founded the megadeth and assumed the role of frontman and responsible for all the success of the band, which currently has 16 studio albums in its discography. Your last job is The Sick, The Dying… And The Dead!released in September 2022.

Even after 40 years of his resignation, Dave Mustaine still demonstrates that his past with Metallica is present in his life. In August 2022 in an interview with the podcast The Joe Rogan Experiencehe recalled what happened and stated what bothered him the most:

“I went straight to Megadeth, but at the time I was trying to digest everything that had happened. What bothered me the most was that I had all my songs that I left behind. I said, ‘Don’t use my songs.’ of course they used it. They used it on the first disc, on the second disc, there are parts of my song in a song on the third disc. All the solos on the first disc are mine, except they’re performed by Kirk Hammett. They’re similar, but aren’t the same. He’s not a bad guitar player”. Check out:
