Why Nickelback has so many haters, according to fan Lizzo

American singer reflected in an interview on the hatred surrounding the Canadian band, which she is so fond of

Although one of the most successful rock bands of recent decades, with more than 50 million records sold, several albums at the top of the charts in several countries and singles played extensively, the Nickelback has been the subject of criticism for a long time. There are those who consider the sound “water with too much sugar” and even question the theme of some lyrics, either by appealing to clichés or by an approach considered sexist.

But the group, of course, has a huge following. and the singer lizzo is part of that group.

In a 2019 video that went viral on social media again, the American artist came out in defense of the Canadian band. At the time, she participated in the painting “Jam or Not a Jam”, by CBCin a game that consisted of listening to songs by other artists and saying whether to do a show with them or not.

When it came time for the hit “How You Remind Me” by Chad Kroeger and company, the voice of “Truth Hurts” declared:

“Why don’t people like Nickelback? Nickelback gets a lot of hate. I think I play with them. This song has a beautiful climax.”

While listening to the song, Lizzo showed that she didn’t know the lyrics, but she knew the melody by heart. Then she said:

“I don’t know the words, but everyone knows this melody. The part where the battery stops? Great. Chad had curly blond hair, had it permed. That’s the only reason I could make them shit, because this song is amazing.”

Nickelback’s response

With the video back on the networks, Nickelback himself became aware of the praise coming from his illustrious fan. The band shared the footage on Twitter and stated:

“Thank you Lizzo for the kind words! Open invitation to any show at any time… maybe see you in Houston this summer?”

Lizzo’s rock background

In interviews over the years, Lizzo has made her rock-oriented background clear several times, although she is a pop artist who also flirts with other genres. In a 2022 interview with vanity fair, the artist commented that she was even bullied at school for listening to bands of the style, such as Radiohead. At the time, she even had her own progressive rock project.

“It was a black school, most of the students were black and others were non-white, Caribbean, I had Nigerian friends… they all listened to what was playing on the radio: usher, Destiny’s Child, Ludacris. And I was more of a fan radiohead and from the disk OK Computer.” I hid it, even when I was in a rock band, because I didn’t want to be mocked by my peers — they would yell ‘white girl’. I also wore these bell-bottoms with embroidery on the legs — and they said, ‘You look like a white girl, why do you want to look like a hippie?’ I so wanted to be accepted; not adjusting hurt too much.”

In February of this year, the singer played the song “Du Hast”, by the metal band Rammstein, at two concerts in Germany. First, in Hamburg, it was just a little bit. Then, in Berlin, there was a more complete performance, with the whole band properly rehearsed.

@jacquelinekirchhoff Germany = Rammstein 😭 she had just learned how to say “Oma”, that’s why she incorporated it #lizzo#rammstein#germany#german#funny#concert#thespecialtour#specialtour#tour @lizzo @Rammstein ♬ Originalton – Jackie
