George Michael sang with Queen at the band’s 1992 Freddie Mercury tribute concert.
A few months after the death of Freddie Mercuryon April 20, 1992, the members of the Queen organized a concert in honor of the iconic singer, called The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. In this ocasion, George Michael was one of the guests – and there was a rumor that he would replace the frontman of the English band.
However, during an interview with the magazine classic rockthe drummer roger taylor revealed how Michael was never intended to replace mercury. At the The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, George Michael sang “Somebody To Love,” and the performance was deemed “impressive” by Brian Mayguitarist of Queen.
In the conversation, roger taylor talked about the reactions of the show in question. “I remember reading some very average reviews of the The Sun or some gritty newspaper like that,” he stated. “I don’t know, I was in this whirlwind of activity – it felt like I was in some kind of dream.”
I remember being determined to put Elton [John] singing with axl [Rose]which was great, because axl never showed up for rehearsal.
“david [Bowie] he appeared, Robert Plant was creator. George Michael was magnificent,” continued the musician. taylor was asked about rumors that Michael would join the Queen. “No, not really,” she replied.
“I remember hearing the rumors. But it wouldn’t suit us. George wasn’t used to working with a live band,” continued the drummer. “When he heard the power behind him at rehearsal, he couldn’t believe it. He thought he was in a Concorde or something.”
What did Brian May say about George Michael in the tribute to Freddie Mercury?
in conversation after The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert (via Smooth Radio), Brian May explained how George Michael surprised: “I would say it was exciting to work with George Michael. Without any kind of falsehood, he was one of the big surprises for most people of the night, I know.”
It wasn’t a surprise to me because I knew he could do it. I knew he had it in him. In addition to the great delicacy it has – the great control, the great dynamics – it has enormous power.
