In a lawsuit opened in 2016, Ed Sheeran is accused of plagiarizing Marvin Gaye; Accusation involves similarities between ‘Let’s Get It On’ and ‘Thinking Out Loud’
In a process initiated in 2016, Ed Sheeran is accused of plagiarism”Let’s Get It On,” one of the biggest hits of Marvin GayeIn the song “Thinking Out Loud.” Relatives of Ed Townsend, one of the writers of the iconic song, filed the lawsuit. Now, a lawyer on the part of townsend stated as Sheeran “confessed” to the copy during the show.
The charges in question tell how Sheeran and the co-author Amy Wadge copied the rhythm of the 1973 track, as well as a four-chord ascending sequence. Furthermore, there are claims of “striking similarities” between the two songs, something that violates copyright.
In the process, according to information from the The Associated Press, Irene Farkaslawyer of Sheeranspoke to the court as “Thinking Out Loud” is a “sincere song,” it was written “without copying” Marvin Gaye and features elements heavily used in pop music.
In response, the lawyer Ben Crump stated as Ed Sheeran “confessed” to having copied Gaye when he mixed the two songs in a concert. “If I had done what you are accusing me of doing, I would be an idiot to go on stage in front of 20,000 people. [e fazer isso],” contradicted the singer (via Rolling Stone USA).
I believe most pop songs are built on building blocks that have been freely available for hundreds of years.
At another point in the trial, Sheeran explained how “Thinking Out Loud” was inspired by the love held between his grandparents. “Most pop songs can fit most pop songs. You could go from ‘let it be‘ for ‘No Woman, No Cry‘ and back,” he continued. The artist also commented that, at the very least, the song in question reminded him of van morrisson.
