30th edition of the awards revealed nominees, from Chico César to Anitta, and announced changes with a focus on diversity
The Brazilian Music Award released, last Tuesday (25), its list of nominees. There are 31 categories in all, ranging from traditional artists from the national music market to new industry highlights. The edition also marks the 30th year of the award.
Chico César and the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra stand out this year with three nominations each, in a diverse list that includes artists from all regions of Brazil. This, incidentally, is the purpose of the award, which recognizes and values artists from musical genres ranging from MPB to classical music.
Anitta, Baco Exu dos Blues, Criolo, Gloria Groove and Marília Mendonça have two nominations each.
New this year, the Singer/Singer category has been changed to Performer to include non-binary and non-binary artists.
Another change was the old name Pop/Rock/Reggae/Hip Hop/Funk, which now becomes broader. The nominees starting this year will be grouped under the genres “Pop/Rock” and “Urban Music”, which encompasses more styles without having the restriction of just reggae, hip-hop or funk, giving space to trap and electronic music.
The highlights of the new “Urban Music” category were the groups Afrocidade, Pavilhão 9, Planet Hemp. In the interpreter classification, the nominees were Baco Exu do Blues, Criolo, Gloria Groove, IZA, Xênia França.
