Rita Lee, patroness of rock, died on Monday night, 8, aged 75
Rita Lee was the cover of Rolling Stone Brazil on two occasions. The first of them, in December 2007. The singer was celebrating her 60th birthday and spoke about notorious episodes of her career, such as the departure of Mutants and arrest for possession of marijuana during her first pregnancy, both in 1976, and modestly praised her husband: “Roberto [de Carvalho] he is a maestro of good taste, of refined harmony, an impeccable instrumentalist. I, on the other hand, am a lightning rod of the collective unconscious that doesn’t know how to sing or play anything and gets into the beast”.
Ritawho smoked throughout the photo shoot for the article, summed up his relationship with drugs in our cover story: “It’s a cliché of rocker life to get drunk, get arrested, make a scene, die of an overdose, go in and out of madhouse, becoming terminally ill, phew! Wow, the only drug I use today is Marlboro. Is it possible that they will never leave me alone?”.
Rita Lee even mentioned the granddaughter Isabella, who was two years old at the time. The singer joked: “If I had known that being a grandmother was so great, I wouldn’t have been a mother.”
In November 2022, Rita Lee returned to the cover of Rolling Stone Brazilwhen she was about to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, an award for her artistic work given by the Latin Grammy – another achievement for the singer, who added eight nominations and two wins at the award.
In the new interview, Rita touched on a variety of subjects, including comments on her title of Queen of Rock: “I like being called the ‘patron saint of freedom’ more than the ‘queen of rock’, which I find a bit cheesy…”. The preference for Patroeira da Liberdade appears as a tribute to the battle waged against attempts at censorship by the military dictatorship, which banned the artist’s records. Part of the documents from the time were exposed at the MIS in 2022.
