Singer Maria Rita, daughter of Elis Regina, is named after Rita Lee
The singer Maria Rita was very moved during Rita Lee’s vigil, this Wednesday 10, at the planetarium, in Ibirapuera Park, in Sao Paulo. Dejected, she left the farewell ceremony of the artist in tears and was supported by the son of the Brazilian rock queen João Lee.
Maria Rita is the daughter of Elis Regina and named after Rita Lee, with whom her mother was a close friend. Both artists became close after Rita received help from Elis while she was imprisoned in 1976 during the military dictatorship in Brazil.
At the time, Rita Lee was pregnant with her first child and was arrested in her apartment in São Paulo after police found marijuana there. In an interview with Quem magazine in 2010, the singer said the drug was “planted” by the police. At the time, she assured that her drug was not hers and that she had quit smoking because she was pregnant at the time. However, the agents didn’t believe her story.
At the beginning of her arrest, Rita Lee was held in the State Department of Criminal Investigations (DEIC). It was in this place that Elis Regina appeared taking by the hand of her son João Marcello Bôscoli, then 6 years old, on the second day of her arrest, and supported the artist.
