The pop group’s performance is remembered as one of the worst in halftime history of the sporting event
Throughout its history, the super bowl had many historic halftime shows. Some of them, however, were a little questionable and divided public opinion. It was the case of the performance of the black Eyed Peasin 2011.
Interestingly, it was one of the few performances at the sporting event to feature guitars in the spotlight in recent years. In the case of the group then formed by fergie, will.i.am, taboo It is appthe instrument featured prominently during a version of the song “Sweet Child O’Mine“, of Armas e Rosaswith the participation of none other than slash.
Before, the group had already performed the hits “I Gotta Feeling” It is “Boom Boom Pow”. The guitarist in the top hat, then, came up with his Gibson Les Paul inseparable for the version sung by fergie. During the solo, he even played a fragment of “slither“, of Velvet Revolvera band he formed a few years after leaving the guns.
After that, the black Eyed Peas went on amending several of his successes: “pump it”, “Let’s Get It Started”, “OMG” (will.i.am collaborating with Usher, featuring himself), “Where Is the Love?”, “The Time (Dirty Bit)” (the famous version of “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” and a reprise of “I Gotta Feeling”.

Black Eyed Peas reviews
The criticism leveled at the Black Eyed Peas for their performance on super bowl weren’t exactly due to Slash’s participation. The entire performance was commented on somewhat negatively by netizens and even specialized journalists.
In an article published earlier this year by Rolling Stone USA, the newsroom professionals made a list of all the shows in the history of the sporting event, from the worst to the best. The Black Eyed Peas took the least favorable position. In the analysis, it is said by the journalist Rob Sheffield:
“Worse. Just the worst. Watching it at the time, you instantly knew you were witnessing something magical and special – like seeing a unicorn cough up blood. The Black Eyed Peas had light-up robot suits. Cool! Kinda cool! They played their version of ‘I’ve Had the Time of My Life’. Not so cool! Usher looked like he wanted to hide. Then the tragic words: ‘Ladies and gentlemen… the one and only… Slash’. Oh Slash, poor Slash – a duet with Fergie on ‘Sweet Child o’ Mine’. How did this happen? This was the same Super Bowl where Christina Aguilera gave her memorable rendition of the National Anthem, so yes, that was a tough day for music. For Steelers fans too.”
In a text of the time (via Guitar World), the reporter Vince Cestoneof bleacher report, defined the group as “pathetic” or “mediocre at best”. O SB Nation pointed out that the songs “didn’t translate to a live setting”.
Directly to Slash’s participation, the magazine Kerrang! defined the version of “Sweet Child O’Mine” of that day as “the worst in history”. The text says:
“Slash enters the scene, ascending from the stage in a circle of dry ice, wearing a bejeweled hat that matches Fergie’s shoulder pads. And then begins. Sounding like a bad version of Axl Rose with food in her mouth, the Black Eyed Peas singer delivers the performance with all the precision of a drunk kid with a fire hose. It’s weird, it’s scary, it’s… just plain bad.”
