McFly talks about his visit to Brazil and about an album: “good things happen to those who wait”

In an exclusive interview, the British band McFly commented on how they have enjoyed the first days in Brazil and told everything they can – so far – about the next album, already finished.

Awaited for a decade, the return of the British band McFly to Brazil was lively and nostalgic – onstage and off. Since their visit to São Paulo, the tour’s first city, where a series of unprepared walks in the metropolis resulted in a meeting and a photo with fans through Ibirapuera Park, the four members made history in their passage through the country – in Belo Horizonte, they even promoted a request for wedding on stage.

The reunion had been awaited since March 2020, when it had to be postponed a few days before the first performance, due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since then, the band, which turns 20 in 2023, has released two compilations, ‘The Lost Songs’ and ‘Young Dumb Thrills’and added even more songs to the already long list of songs that adult fans wanted to hear at concerts.

Shortly before the second presentation here, in an exclusive interview with Rolling Stone Brazil, Danny Jones (vocals and guitarist) Harry Judd (drummer) and Dougie Poynter (bassist), with the absence of vocalist and guitarist Tom Fletcherwho had unforeseen circumstances with his voice and needed to protect himself, talked about returning to Brazil, the difficulty in choosing the setlist, the new album that should be released soon, and much more!

When asked, early on, about the receptivity of Brazilian fans and the first days in the country, the band members smiled.

“It’s been wonderful”, said the drummer, who soon became emotional and grateful for the attention they have received from fans at the hotel door, at the airport and around the city: “We like it”.

“The weather is perfect and we even went for a run, the food has been delicious, the weather is great, the show was fun,” commented the bassist.

Set list: a very difficult choice

One of the biggest challenges for this tour was choosing the setlist, as confirmed by the band. Putting together a perfect mix of old and new songs was no easy task.

‘Josephine’from the collection The Lost Songs, released in 2020, was one that the drummer suggested to include in the shows: “I think it’s a cool song! And it’s fun to do something new. It’s nice to try something new and it’s also very difficult to please everyone. Many fans asked ‘That’s the Truth’, ‘Down Goes Another One’, ‘Broccoli’…”, he said Harry Juddwho added: “This (‘Broccoli’) was one that was on the 2020 setlist for the Brazil tour, because we know people love it, but when we went to rehearse to come this time, we realized it was a little boring. We try to create the best combination!”.

And what a combination! With, on average, 20 nostalgic live tracks, the performances in São Paulo lasted approximately two hours and won the approval of most fans. About this, Danny Jones laughed as he recalled a funny situation that happened the morning after the May 17th show: “I met up with one of the sound guys and asked ‘So, what did you think of yesterday?’ and he replied, ‘Wonderful, but loooooong,’ she said, laughing, remembering the gentleman’s reaction.

And will the setlist be the same at every show? Harry Judd guarantees that the intention is to keep it intact for the most part, with few exceptions that may occur according to the energy of each performance – as happened with ‘No Worries’ on the first day, which was led by the audience and Tom Fletcher attended the fan request; or with ‘Not Alone’ on the second day, which replaced ‘Walk in the Sun’, both acoustic, sung by Danny Jones.

McFly and Inspiration in the 70s and 80s

During the chat, the Rolling Stone Brazilalso discussed the new album, already finished by McFly, still no release date announced. “When should it be released?”, we asked, curious, to which Danny Jones replied, good-naturedly: “That’s a great question to ask here, since we’re at BMG (label)”.

“What I can say is that we’re really excited about it and that it’s something special,” Judd said. “There are no references to old albums. It’s heavier, with more guitar, inspired by 70’s and 80’s rock,” he continued.

Dougie Poynter explained, “It’s more like the ’80s, when pop music had a rock vibe. She was captivating, fun and still rock.”

the vocalist Danny Jones said that it all started after the covid, when they built their own studio and were ready to produce, but they asked themselves: “What are we as a BAND?”

“The part we like the most is playing live. How can we put this on an album? We put a lot of thought into it and this new recording space that we have allowed us to complete this project—with that thought,” she said.

Both Danny Jones and Harry Judd and Dougie Poynterconsidered the challenges of producing an album out of the box, moving away from the focus on acoustic songs, “more natural and easier to make”, as they put it, and producing more thoughtful tracks, which would reflect the new phase of McFly.

Rolling Stone Brasil tried to find out some details not yet revealed about the project, such as the name of the album or the name of the only special song that brings references from the band’s old albums, but the information is “under lock and key” and should be revealed soon. by the members themselves.

“Good things happen to those who wait”, left the tip, and ended, Harry Judd.
