Only 13% of festival headliners are women, says UK study

Only one out of ten main attractions is a woman at UK festivals – the Brazilian scene is similar

Study carried out by BBC News investigated the number of female headliners at UK festivals. Data shows that, in every ten, only one headliner is female in the 2022 events.

As determined by Rolling Stone UKmajor festivals in Europe and the United States made a commitment to adopt line-ups with 50% men and women 5 years ago, but that did not happen.

There were 50 events analyzed, with 200 main performances. Only 26 (13%) were bands formed by women or solo artists. While 149 (74.5%) were bands formed by men or male solo artists.

In Brazil, the scenario is not so different. At the Lollapalooza 2022, for example, of the seven main attractions planned, only two were women (Miley Cyrus and doja cat). At the Rock in Rio – although the festival promotes a full day with a female line-up – there is only one woman among the seven headliners of Palco Mundo (Dua Lipa).

With a proposal similar to the European festival, the Primavera Sound Sao Paulo stood out for the equality with a lineup divided almost in half between male and female artists for the debut edition in 2022. This is reflected in the main attractions, of which 50% are women.
