The documentary told the story of Tina Turner from her poor and abandoned childhood – both her father and mother are gone. As a teenager in St. Louis, the singer, still known as Anna Mae Bullock, joined the band of Ike Turner, who gave it her stage name.
Life of neglect and abuse
The film explored her energy a lot, but it didn’t ignore her pain. Though he’s suffered through the trauma of violence and lack of love, the singer has never been afraid to talk about it—or to let others do it.
After the historic interview for the Peoplehas published two biographies, Me, Tina – The Story of My Life (1986) and Tina Turner – My Love Story (2019), a biopic (Tina1993, with Angela Bassett) and made into a musical in Tina: The Musical by Tina Turner (2018), written by Katori Hall, who recently wrote the series P-Valleinspired by another piece of his authorship.
It was in talking to her shortly before the premiere of the musical that the directors got the impression that the singer saw the documentary as a farewell, not from the stage, from which she retired in 2009, but from public life. “It’s goodbye to your part in your story,” TJ Martin said. “As people kept asking her what she suffered, for Tina she continued to be a form of work because she can’t separate herself from the cultural icon that she helped create. So separating is literally stepping out of the spotlight.”
Precursor of Me too
Tina and Ike Turner had successful careers and a marriage marred by his violence. In 1976, after suicide attempts, she left the relationship with little more than the right to use her stage name. But she has found it difficult to continue her artistic career, as she is often linked to Ike. In an attempt to get rid of it, you gave an interview to “People” magazine, speaking openly on the subject, being you a forerunner of the movement Me too.
