Roger Waters detonates investigation for alluding to Nazism: ‘They want to defame and silence me’

Roger Waters’ controversial costume is ‘clearly a statement in opposition to fascism’, according to singer

After Berlin police launched an investigation into roger waterssinger and one of the founders of pink Floydfor using costumes with alleged allusions to Nazi uniforms in a show in the city, the artist spoke out on social networks, and claimed how “they want to defame and silence me.”

“We are investigating suspicions of incitement to hatred, because the clothes worn on stage can praise or justify the National Socialist regime and disturb public order. The clothes resemble that of an SS officer,” martin hawegspokesman for the Berlin police, told the AFP.

In response, waters criticized the controversy surrounding the costume design. “My recent performance in Berlin attracted attacks in bad faith from those who want to slander and silence me because they disagree with my political views and moral principles,” she wrote.

The elements of my performance that have been called into question are clearly a statement in opposition to fascism, injustice and fanaticism in all their forms. Attempts to portray these elements as something different are underhanded and politically motivated. The depiction of an unhinged fascist demagogue has been a feature of my shows since ‘The Wall,’ of pink Floydin 1980.

“I have spent my entire life speaking out against authoritarianism and oppression wherever I see it.
When I was a child, after the war, the name of Anne Frank was often talked about in our home, she has become a permanent reminder of what happens when fascism goes unchecked,” continued the singer.

Finally, roger waters spoke about the family history and took the opportunity to criticize the German authorities again. “My parents fought the Nazis in Second World War, with my father paying the ultimate price. Regardless of the consequences of attacks against me, I will continue to condemn injustice and all those who commit it,” he declared.

About Roger Waters’ controversial costumes

Despite the recent controversy, the costume design is not new. waters used it on tour The Wallstill with the pink Floyd. The intention is to address the plot of the album of the same name, which makes a harsh criticism of fascist regimes from Pink’s story.

The same even generated discussion on social networks when the names of Anne Frank (known for her diary, in which she recorded the violence of the Nazi regime while she was a child) and Shireen Abu Akleh (journalist killed by the Israeli army) were shown on the big screen.

While some people claimed the moment was a ‘disrespect’ to the memory of Annefans and other users of social networks highlighted that it was an anti-fascist demonstration by the former member of pink Floyd.
