Astrud Gilberto had his death announced early this Tuesday (6). The singer from Bahia passed away on Monday (5), at the age of 83. Owner of the voice that internationalized the Bossa novait was her recording in English of “The Girl from Ipanema”which would end up becoming the symbol of the movement and one of the most popular Brazilian songs in history.

With five million copies sold, “The Girl From Ipanema” was recorded in 12962 and released the following year as a single from the hugely popular album Getz/Gilberto– result of the meeting between Stan Getz It is Joao Gilbertoto whom Astrud was married at the time.

The record would go down in history, becoming one of the most influential of Brazilian music in the world, despite the alleged differences that would have appeared between Getz and João Gilberto in post-production (via The globe).

The record, however, would be most responsible for taking Astrud’s name to the world. Years later, in 1965, and already separated from João Gilberto, she would start a successful solo career, which would earn her 19 albums and a lot of awards.

Debut

Despite having started his musical career in 1960, in the historic presentation Night of Love, Smile and FlowerAstrud had never recorded anything before “The Girl from Ipanema”.

Insistence

Astrud would have insisted on entering Getz/Gilbertosecond Ruy Castro in the book No more longing. In addition to participating in “A Garota de Ipanema”, she also lends vocals to “Corcovado”.

For participating in the album Getz/GilbertoAstrud would have received US$ 120, the union rate for the recording, at the time.

English version

When Getz/Gilberto left, in 1963, a version of “A Garota de Ipanema” in English was released as a single – in it, the duet between Astrud and João Gilberto was reduced only to the female participation, which ended up selling millions of copies.

With the recording, Astrud would earn two nominations for Grammyas Best Recording, which it won alongside Stan Getz, and as Breakthrough Artist, which it ended up losing – to the Beatles.
