Black Sabbath: Geezer Butler recalls ‘lunatic’ who tried to ‘sacrifice’ Tony Iommi

According to Geezer Butler, Black Sabbath was always the target of religious protests when they went to the United States

When black Sabbath was still formed by Geezer Butler (low), Tony Iommi (guitar) and Ozzy Osbourne (vocal), Iommi was almost “sacrificed” by a “lunatic” man during a concert by the legendary British heavy metal band.

During an interview with Reader’s Digest, butler reflected on life and career, being raised in a Catholic home, “satanic” images attributed to the band – and how this resulted in several bizarre experiences for the group’s musicians.

“My dad wasn’t too pleased when he saw the inverted cross on the cover of our first album,” he said. “But generally nobody in the UK or Europe cared much about our satanic imagery.”

However, it was different for black Sabbath in the United States: “People were threatening us and showing up at our shows with crosses and bibles. In Nashville, someone jumped onstage and attacked tony with a knife.”

Happily, tony turned to kick his faulty amplifier at that moment, saw the attacker and moved out of the way. The police arrested the man, although we don’t know what happened to him. But he wanted to sacrifice tony. Lunatic.
