Because Bob’s burgers will never show us who Belcher’s kids will be when they grow up

Bob’s burgers is still going strong after 12 seasons on Fox, and Movie Bob’s Burgers is in theaters right now. Like any episodic cartoon, the characters don’t actually age, so we’ve basically seen the Belcher children living the same year of their lives for over a decade. One can’t help but wonder what these eccentric and precocious kids will look like when they grow up, and while it’s generated a lot of speculation online among fans, that’s not something we’ll see in the series. While this may be disappointing, the authors have a very good reason for it.

Speaking with writer and producer Nora Smith for Movie Bob’s Burgersexplained that looking too far ahead will affect how we perceive the magic of Belcher children’s childhood hopes and dreams:

We have an episode where you think about it, but there still seems to be a lot of potential and it’s not about ruining the lives of the kids. [laughs], but there is still a lot of potential and it seems that if you name what you will be, you are hindering it a bit. Like Gene, you can be anything you want to be, you can be a robot DJ, you can be … anything, you know? So I never really thought about it much because I love how hopeful little Gene is.

A robot DJ is not a bad gig! Whatever that means. What Nora Smith says makes sense. Part of the appeal of the show is imagining what the lives of Gene, Louise and Tina might be like. Once the authors show it to us, all that potential is ripped out of our imaginations.

Writer and producer Loren Bouchard reiterated this point, citing the longest running animated show of all time, The Simpsons, As an example of what you are trying to avoid:

I have a memory of watching The Simpsons and they go ahead and show you what the characters will be like when they’re older, and I remember thinking, ‘Oh, it’s from the voice of the series, they tell me what’s going to happen, it’s a flash. -forward of the author. And we try never to, the voice of the show doesn’t take sides, not even the writers, but let’s let the guys, in this episode that Nora talked about, look forward. It must be them.

It’s hard to say which episode they are referring to, since the show covered so much ground. We saw small children, they were rendered in 62 different animation styles and the first episode “Human Flesh” alludes to the show’s original premise where the Belchers were a cannibal family . Despite all the crazy adventures we’ve seen them go on, there are some things the creators simply won’t do to not spoil the spirit of the series, and that includes live episode review.

Movie Bob’s Burgers now it’s in theaters! People love it, our own Eric Eisenberg gave him a “well done” review, and is considered by many to be a prime example of the rare occasion when a The TV adaptation is well done.
