With Changes, Grammy Academy Wants to ‘Inspire Change, Progress and Collaboration’
THE Recording Academyresponsible for Grammyannounced details of the 2023 ceremony, such as the creation of new categories, including Composer of the Yearwhich promises to be one of the main highlights of the award from the next edition, according to information from the NME.
The new categories include Composer of the Year (non-classical), Best Alternative Music Performance, Best Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media. Furthermore, the award Special Merit Award will be given to whoever takes it Best Song for Social Change.
“We are very excited to honor these diverse communities of music creators through the newly established awards and changes and to continue to cultivate an environment responsible for inspiring change, progress and collaboration,” he said. Harvey Mason Jr.CEO of Academyin a statement.
The executive then spoke about the institution’s long-term plans: “The Academy’s top priority is to effectively represent the people of music we serve, and each year that means listening to our members and ensuring that our rules and guidelines reflect our ever-evolving industry.”

What are these categories and what do they represent?
Composer of the Year (non-classical)
This category recognizes excellence in writing, the profession and art of songwriting, as well as honoring outstanding songwriters in the industry.
Best Alternative Music Performance
Recognizes the best recordings in an alternative performance by a solo artist, in collaborations between two or more artists, duo or established group.
Best American Performance
Awards an American artistic performance by a solo artist, collaborating artists, duo or established group.
Best Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media
Recognizes soundtrack discs composed predominantly of original scores and created specifically for a current video game or other interactive media.
Best Spoken Poetry Album
A category responsible for awarding albums that are specifically of poetry in the eligible period of Academy.
Special Merit Award: Best Song for Social Change
Special Merit Award will be determined by a committee ratified by the Board of TrusteesgivesRecording Academy. Entries must contain lyrical content that addresses a social issue and promotes understanding, as well as building peace and empathy.
