Planet Hemp is ‘much more’ than rap rock: ‘A lot of samba, Bezerra da Silva, jazz and a lot of things together’ [ENTREVISTA]

During an interview with Rolling Stone Brasil, Marcelo D2, BNegão and Pedro Garcia talked about Planet Hemp’s next album, JARDINEIROS: A COLHEITA

One of the great names of national rap, planet hemp acquired a lot of strength over the years, even in the space of more than 20 years without releasing a studio album. In 2022, the group released GARDENERSsuccessor of The Invasion of the Clever Smoke Man (2000), and a little less than a year prepares to GARDENERS: THE HARVESTwhich arrives on streaming platforms this Wednesday, 16.

The band, formed by Marcelo D2, BNegão, ants, Peter Garcia It is Nobrubrought five more tracks on HARVESTwhich features 20 songs, such as “PUT FIRE,” “NEVER BE AFRAID,” “SAVE KALUNGA,” “TO SEE THE COLORS OF THE WORLD,” “WE WILL NOT GIVE UP,” “NO ONE SAFE PEOPLE” It is “RHYTHM AND ANGER,” plus two remixes, of “YET” It is “STRONG WAVE.”

In the music world, a release in this style would be considered a deluxe, something common to see. Although, D2 It is BNegão guarantee that this is not the case. During an interview with Rolling Stone Brazilthe pair of musicians and Peter Garciaproducer and sound engineer at planet hempdefined the two GARDENERS as “different” projects.

Before the release of the first album, the musicians had no intention of working on another version of it, but a few accidents happened and they found themselves in the middle of a collection of materials.

“This process was natural, I have said that, in the planet hemp, we have our time, you know? Our time is like this: we do things the way we think they have to be done, in our moment,” he said. D2. This group process was even defined as an “acquired privilege” by the singers.

As BNegão explained, the idea of THE HARVEST emerged shortly after the release of GARDENERS. Many of the new songs have emerged since early development on the 2022 record.

In GARDENERSwe took songs that were already ready because we thought the balance was the one we wanted to show at that time, and HARVEST it’s a celebratory record,” said D2.

The reasons for planet hemp discarding songs varied greatly. After all, THE HARVEST It is a mixture of materials that planet hemp didn’t make it in time to launch GARDENERS.

“We were in doubt whether to launch [esses materiais] as an extra, EP, a GARDENERS 2something like that,” recalled BNegão. “As the songs are really part of this process, we came to the conclusion that it was the best thing to release as if it were a harvest. That’s why we don’t use the word ‘deluxe.’

There were things that we felt needed to be made public, but it just couldn’t be there.

‘NEVER BE AFRAID’

One of the four unpublished songs present in GARDENERS: THE HARVESTNEVER BE AFRAID” involves “a lot of faith and energy” from the group, who felt obliged to make it “exist for the world.” It has aspects of samba groove and has the participation of Posdnuosknown for his work on the De La Soulas well as production of tropkillaz, ship It is Mario Caldato.

It is worth mentioning how Posdnuos is one of the great references, masters and idols of artists (since before the existence of the planet hemp). This song would come out on GARDENERS original, but there were some problems with the release of the sample present in it.

“There was a sample of a song from Jorge Benand as he was organizing his career, he ended up not releasing the parade,” recalled BNegão. “He stopped generally releasing samples and the like to organize the publisher, do his things and such.”

We were able to honor the George and everything turned out just right. We’re going to be able to release this song with the weight it deserves.

‘SALVE KALUNGA’

Already “SAVE KALUNGA” honors Fabio Kalungafounder of the bands Head It is Bnegão & The Frequency Selectors who died in 2017. In fact, the musician was extremely important for the planet hempsince it presented Garcia It is Nobru. “I made this homage with a whole base of Nobru. I wrote these lyrics that I felt the need to pay this homage to put him in the place of memory he has to be,” said BNegão.

‘COLOURS OF THE WORLD’

This track is one of the most special of GARDENERS: THE HARVEST and one of the favorites of BNegão. According to the singer, the song has a “groove of old nonsense,” because “only people over 40 can do that kind of groove [risos].”

Remixes of ‘ONDA FORTE’ and ‘AINDA’

Shortly after the official release of GARDENERS in 2022, BNegão received a message from Kamauconsidered by him as one of the greatest rhymes in Brazil, extolling “STRONG WAVE” and placed it as a favorite of the disc in question.

A few days passed and Kamau sent a rhyme to Marcelo D2, which he saw an opportunity to include in a possible remix. Already “YET” had a great participation of BNegãowho wrote the lyrics and is the vocals on the track.

Planet Hemp is universal and timeless

Something very interesting to note in the public of planet hemp is the variety in age group. According to the group’s members, there has been a good flow of fans over the years, from the “old” crowd to those who fell in love with their work on their return in 2012 and the release of GARDENERS. Including, BNegão there’s a good explanation for that.

“We have an idea of trying to make a song that stays, a song that has the validity of a classic, something prolonged that makes a difference in people’s lives, including ours,” he said. Marcelo D2 he added talking about the band’s concerts.

The concerts of planet they are a catharsis. It has a lot of energy. This catharsis that we bring from our generation, few shows have nowadays. bernard he said something very interesting about us being an underground band that inhabits the conventional. There’s a legacy in these shows: this kid thing comes in with the gas for a punk circle, and the older ones who are really missing it ***.

One of the hallmarks of planet hemp, since the beginning of the group, is the mixture of musical genres in the songs. In addition to rap and rock, there are influences from ragga, raggae, samba and more. The group is often defined as rap rock, but it is much more than that: they “represent Brazil.”

planet there is a lot of samba, a lot Bezerra da Silvathere is jazz and a lot of things together, which we mix over time and various styles of rap, releasing different things,” he commented BNegão. “We belong to a generation that has Chico Science & Nação Zumbi It is Raimundos.”

Our generation is the mixed generation, so we are doing nothing less than our natural path, of doing current and old things. So we had a lot of help from the Pedrinho.

“On the first record, the songs were all more similar, because they were all influences within all the songs, with ragga, rap, rock,” he added. Marcelo D2. With the passage of time, in YouDogs Bark but the Caravan Doesn’t Stop (1997) for example, we were already sharing things.”

According to the singer, in the beginning, the band didn’t have the experience or confidence to make a samba or a rap – and they thought that everything needed to be very mixed. Then, as their career progressed, they arrived at a sound they liked.

[Em JARDINEIROS: A COLHEITA] we had more confidence to go after the experience. This thing of having Pedrinho as a sound engineer and producer within the band was fundamental. We don’t need an interlocutor because we have someone in the band who does that.

that is, second D2experience makes the creative process much easier than planet hemp. Before, they changed a song a lot until reaching the final version because they faced many limitations, but now they are more confident and experienced.

A whole trajectory (and hiatus) resulted in the two GARDENERS

the fans of planet hemp must have gone crazy for some new music from the band between the releases of The Invasion of the Clever Smoke Man It is GARDENERS. However, all that waiting time resulted in something very good for the musicians.

“The best thing that happened to the process of this record was knowing how to listen to each other. When you’re younger, you have a lot of momentum that you know everything, everything needs to be yours,” he said. D2. “When you get older, you understand [os outros] and start trusting.

In addition to all the studio experience, being able to reach the sound without abandoning ideas along the way, we went through a lot in this band, both personally and professionally. Like any other band, we fought, went to jail, had peaks and rock bottoms, so we were very careful in that personal relationship not to kill each other. [em COLHEITA]. Quite the contrary, we wanted to leave the album hugged and happy.

It is worth remembering how, even though they had collaborated on countless successes, Marcelo D2 It is BNegão they spent about 20 years without composing songs together. Then after we got back, [relembrei que somo] two are a missile together, a beating. It’s a lot of pressure when we get together on planet hempand have it nowhere.”

Second BNegãowith all the experience of the group, their mission “was to maintain and bring the impact that the planet always had, bring innovation and bring the thing that came along the way and so on and we are happy that we managed, both with the original and with the vintage.”

GARDENERS: THE HARVEST will be released this Wednesday, 16, at 20h (Brasília time).
