Guitarist Jeff Beck and singer Johnny Depp have released a new clip of their musical partnership. The song “This is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr” is accompanied by footage made during the concerts that the two have played in the UK in recent days.
The song is an original composition by Depp and pays homage to actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr, who died in 2000 at the age of 85.
Although he shone in film classics such as “Ecstasy” (1932), “Algeria” (1938), “Devil of the Congo” (1942), “Flor do Mal” (1946) and “Samson and Dalilah” (1949), the The greatest success of the actress was not a film role, but an invention. In collaboration with composer George Antheil (“In the Silence of the Night”), he created a revolutionary communication system that, despite being snubbed by the US military during World War II, is the basis of today’s WiFi and Bluetooth. .
Many people are unfamiliar with this other side of the actress’s career, which inspires part of the song’s lines, in which Depp sings that she was “wiped out of the world that made her a star”.
“This is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr” is one of the two original songs of “18”, the next album from the collaboration with Jeff Beck – the other is called “Sad Motherfuckin ‘Parade”. The other recordings are covers, some sung by Depp (such as John Lennon’s “Isolation”, Velvet Underground’s “Venus In Furs”, Everly Brothers’ “Let It Be Me” and Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”) and others only instrumentals (such as “Caroline, No” and “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)”, both by the Beach Boys).
The cover list also includes songs by Killing Joke, Dennis Wilson, The Miracles, Janis Ian and Davy Spillane.
According to the artists, the name “18” refers to the spiritual age they experienced while working on the recordings. The album cover is a drawing by Beck’s wife portraying the duo as teenagers – or as youngsters David Bowie and Elvis Presley. Look down.
The release will take place for the Rhino label on CD and digital platforms on July 15th. Additionally, the record will also be released on vinyl on September 30th.
