Paul Simon addresses hearing loss at the premiere of the documentary In Restless Dreams

In Restless Dreams tells the career of Paul Simon and was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival

Acclaimed folk rock singer who was part of the duo Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon spoke about hearing loss during the premiere of the documentary In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon (2023). The information is from Rolling Stone USA.

The film was shown on Toronto International Film Festival last Sunday, the 10th, and commented on how he is “starting” to accept hearing loss in his left ear. In the event, Simon spoke about the disease and ability to continue presenting in a question and answer session.

“I haven’t fully accepted it, but I’m starting to accept it,” he said alongside Alex Gibney, director of the documentary. “I play the guitar every day. It’s the instrument that allows me to express myself creatively. But it’s also where I seek solace.”

If I’m feeling… ‘whatever’. So it’s a very important thing for me. You know, something happens to you when you have some kind of disability that changes your consciousness or changes the way you interact with life.

According to Paul Simon, there was no improvement in the left ear: “Normally, when I finish an album, I go on tour with it, and then I have the opportunity to really investigate the work. And then it evolves into another pattern, and it goes further.”

“But in a week I’m going to try to work with two guitarists who will play the parts I played on the record and see if I can sing the piece. I’m not sure how I can integrate my voice with the guitars,” the singer continued.

Even with this health problem, Simon still composes new songs: “I wrote a new song called ‘When I Learned to Play Guitar,’ but I don’t know if I’ll do anything with it.”

In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon shows the career of around 60 years of Paul Simonsuch as time as a member of Simon & Garfunkel (formed with childhood friend Art Garfunkel), recording of the successful album Graceland (1986), and the last few years recording at his home studio in Texas. The documentary does not yet have a release date.
