Alex Camargo, Moyses Kolesne and Max Kolesne reflected on their career and almost 30 years of Unmerciful Order
When they worked on the album Unmerciful Order (1994) at the beginning of their career, the brothers Max Kolesne (battery), Alex Camargo (vocals, bass) and Moyses Kolesne (vocals, guitar) didn’t have many ambitions in relation to the Krisiun: they just had a lot of love for metal and death metal.
Almost 30 years after the EP’s release, a lot has changed for the iconic death metal group formed in Rio Grande do Sul in 1990, whether personally or professionally. Including, Unmerciful Order can be seen as an influence on other works in the Krisiunas Mortem Solis (2022), most recent studio album. During an interview with Rolling Stone Brazilthe group took a look back at their career and evolution over the years.
“I think the Mortem Solis It is Unmerciful Order They have something in common, I don’t know why. In my head, there is the color of the cover, the short songs, a brutality… they have something very in common,” he said Moyses Kolesne in the conversation.
According to the musician, Mortem Solis it has a very aggressive and violent cover, which portrays a post-apocalypse like the 1994 album, that “this album certainly deserves to be celebrated, because we were kids coming from Porto Alegre, we didn’t know how things worked.”
We just wanted to play for the love of metal and death metal. We didn’t think about success. We were happy just rehearsing. Clear, [ao longo dos anos] the band became professional, entering the market, to which it had to adapt.
Success came, but this had a negative side for the musicians, because a lot of “pressure” began to appear for them to change and adapt to a more commercial aspect – and they even heard comments such as “records not selling as well” and “the songs are too brutal to play at certain festivals.”
“We’ve always been swallowing a lot of things. Then there were the fashions of the moment, but the Krisiun always coming,” he explained. Moses. “Between these two albums there was a lot of difficulty, but there was a lot of victory. Krisiun managed to reach great moments, like playing death metal with three Brazilians and Latinos, managing to reach very significant milestones.”
Then, the guitarist pointed out how the band never drastically changed its style throughout its discography: “We remain the same, but we evolved in terms of arrangement and everyone improved on their own instrument, we know how the rules of this game work.”
There is a lot of negotiation, a lot behind a band performing, from flights, visas, record label, contracts, recording… all of this brings experience.
Rolling Stone Sessions presents Krisiun at Cine Joia
Krisiuna big name in Brazilian death metal, is the next attraction at Rolling Stone Sessions, which will be held exclusively at Cine Joia. Formed in Porto Alegre (RS) in the 1990s, the trio of brothers Alex Camargo (bass/vocals), Max Kolesne (battery) and Moyses Kolesne (guitar), will perform in the capital of São Paulo on December 2nd, starting at 10pm.
In the exclusive show, the group intends to present their recent album, Mortem Solis (2022), among other classics that could not be missing from the repertoire, which will be special. On the 12th album, the Krisiun is determined to keep its long-standing underground fearlessness intact.
In a press release, the brothers said that Mortem Solis it comes like a white-hot blade from a prefabricated musical culture. It is a fierce and aggressive death metal, however, extremely worked – which can be seen in the tracks “Serpent Messiah”, “Sworn Enemies”, “Swords into Flesh” It is “War Blood Hammer”.
“We had really new ideas coming in Mortem Solis“, it says Moyses Kolesneguitarist of Krisiun. “Maybe because we stopped for two years [devido a pandemia], but we’ve also seen the metal scene become more commercial and fake. As an old band, we keep it real and that’s our mission at the moment – to bring real death metal back.”
Inspired by several extreme metal bands, including Slayer, Venom, Destruction, Motörhead, Morbid Angel and the famous countryman Gravethe band says the new project is more “direct”, which shows the vision of Alex, Moses It is Max about the current heavy metal scene, taking into account the individual evolution of each member as a brother, person and musician.
We cut out everything we considered unnecessary to make it as brutal as possible. Without using a computer or click-tracks – all in the true spirit of death metal. We had a lot of fun together. It was this cohesion that gave us Krisiun’s path, the path we are on and will continue to follow.”
