Review: Rod Stewart offers the classics, but duets in vain with Ivete Sangalo in SP

The Bahian singer opened the British show and returned to the Allianz Parque stage for two songs

Rod Stewart AND Ivete Sangalo performed at Allianz ParkIn St. Paul, Saturday evening, 30. The idea of bringing together an icon of English rock and an axé star seemed strange since the “Legends In Concert” project was announced. In practice, it was even stranger. Ivete Sangalo’s choice to open Rod Stewart’s show and perform a couple of duets with the Englishman at the end of the show seemed more like a marketing operation for the Bahian singer than an attempt to promote Brazilian music or unite genres musically so distinct. .

“Veveta” took to the stage to share vocals with Sir Rod on the ballad Navigationpublished in 1975, and in dance Do you think I’m sexy?from 1978 – whose melody, as everyone knows, is sucked into the song Taj Mahal, by Jorge Ben Jor. It would have been better, however, if someone had avoided the meeting, which seemed boring and forced. On a financial level alone, the partnership may have had a significant effect: 35 thousand tickets were sold out and the public filled the Palmeiras stadium.

Brightness, nostalgia and an arsenal of hits

The venue was the same one where the British star performed on three other occasions: in 1989, 2008 and 2015 – for a total of 16 shows in Brazil, the first of which was at Rock In Rio in 1985. In 1994, Rod made history on Copacabana Beach with a free show that attracted an estimated 3.5 million people, according to the Guinness Book. This Saturday’s performance, however, may have been the 78-year-old singer’s last in the country. He recently said that he didn’t want to tour rock n’ roll anymore. “I want to do something different. It feels like the end of an era. All things must come to an end. I’m not retiring and I still love singing, I’m just looking for something new,” he said Daily registration.

Like a figure straight out of the 1980s, Rod Stewart took to the stage at Allianz Parque, at 9.30pm, wearing a shiny suit that showed off his traditional spiky blonde hair. In the background, the catchy and sensual rhythm of Love addicta cover by Robert Palmer, appears in a similar arrangement to the original, enhanced by backing vocals from the beautiful and talented girls cheering up his excellent backing band – all with a serious feel, emulating Palmer’s music video.

It was not a choice that, let’s say, immediately thrilled the public, mostly fifty-sixty year olds. The exhilaration came with the excitement You wear it wellwith a separate performance by violinist J’Anna Jacoby, and Oh la laa gem for fans of the Faces, a band of which Rod was a member between 1969 and 1975 – an unusual choice, given that the original recording is sung by Ronnie Wood, years before he joined the Rolling Stones.

“Thanks, we’ll play for two hours!” Rod warned, with no time for small talk. The shower of hits was supported by a sophisticated production that completed a show full of tributes – to Tina Turner, in It takes two; to Christine McVie, in the blues I prefer to go blind; to the Ukrainian people, in Rhythm of my heart; and also Celtic FC, Rod’s favorite club You’re in my heart -, all intertwined with a handful of Stewart’s authorial classics, such as Maggie May, Young Turks, Baby Jane and Forever Youngas well as a series of usual covers from his repertoire that his unmistakable raspy voice has helped to immortalise: The first cut is the deepest (Cat Stevens), I told you recently (Van Morrison), I don’t want to talk about this (Crazy Horse), among others. However, the version of Have you ever seen rain?which would be an appropriate choice for a rainy night in the capital of Sao Paulo.

Micareta in the wrong place

At that moment Ivete Sangalo had finished singing the hit Great Luck (Dust)it became clear: great misfortune for the public who had to witness the out-of-this-world performance of the Bahian singer, who opened the proceedings with The sons of Ivetea song whose theme is drinking in a group of “hot, experienced and dangerous” friends.

The artist, who has just announced a mega tour to celebrate 30 years of his career, is an omnipresent figure on television, whether in soap operas, films, advertising or variety shows. His latest studio album, Onda Boa with Ivetewas released in 2022.

“Won’t Rod be influenced by this woman?”, joked Ivete, speaking of himself in the third person, after combining other hits such as Party, Time for joy AND Accelerate Aê. “Rod is completely in love with me,” he told her later.

Rainha do Axé, who said he was a fan of the rocker, tried to overcome the inadequacy of the repertoire and the disinterest of the audience with remarkable friendliness and good choreography, but without success. It wasn’t a night for joking.
