Guitarist confirms that he tested another vocalist in the original job and reveals why idea was not ahead: “Something I really never wanted to do”
In your book, Down with the system, SERJ TANKIAN surprised the public by revealing that colleagues from system of a Down They tested a new singer without their knowledge in the middle of the second half of the 2010s. The singer, curiously, supported the idea, as he recognizes to be the main obstacle to the band to resume more regular activities – they are not broken, but have few shows and have not released an album since 2005.
Since then, SOAD’s instrumentalists – the guitarist Daron Malakianthe bassist Shavo Odadjian and the drummer John Dolmayan “They did not speak about Tankian’s statement.” Until now. Malakian broke the silence in an interview with Podcast on the Record (via website Igor Miranda).
At the time, Daron made it clear that he had no desire to replace Serj, because he understands that the band is composed of the four members. However, he showed that, yes, the selected singer for testing was good.
He said:
“This was something I never really wanted to do. For me, System of A Down is formed by the four of us. If one of us is not part of the System of a Down, I really don’t want to be part of System of a Down. We thought about this possibility? Yes. But we were in this question? No. We don’t want to go into names.

Malakian denied information shared by Tankian that the vocalist tested could not do guttural, which would have been decisive for his non -entry. According to the guitarist, this does not proceed.
“I thought, ‘I don’t want to look to the side on stage and see other people.’ […]. I think the serj mentioned something in his book about the tested singer could not do guttural or something, and that’s why we didn’t choose him [para substituí-lo]but that is not true. Serj and I never had this conversation about why it didn’t happen. I was kind of said, ‘I don’t think I want to go on with it, I don’t want to do it without being.’
The supposed new System of a Down singer
In the autobiography, Serj Tankian said he knows the singer and even watched him at a charity event. The tested singer even played an Armenian song at the time.
“Shavo patted me on my shoulder. ‘By the way,” Shavo waved toward the singer,’ we tried this guy as a singer. The only problem was that he couldn’t scream and growl. ‘ Looking directly to him. ‘Listen, he is a good singer,’ I said. ‘I can take you to the parking lot right now and teach you these techniques.

Despite this, Tankian remains at System of A Down, which performed a long tour of South America in the first half of this year. Now the band does six special shows in North America, having Korn, Avenged Sevenfold and Defton as opening attractions.
