Ice Spice dispelled rumors that it is an “industry plant”, an expression used to characterize artists who receive support from their record companies when they are not yet known in the music world. In the rapper’s case, she rose to fame when “Munch (Feelin’ U)” went viral on TikTok.
When it comes to an “industry blueprint”, labels rely on the help of algorithms to make their artists’ songs appear more frequently to social media users, simulating organic growth.
In an interview with Variety (via NME), Ice Spice said, “A lot of people threw it in my face, like, ‘Oh, I’ve never seen something happen so fast. She needs to be studied,’ or ‘She’s an industry plant.'”
“I just let people believe what they want, to be honest. I don’t care about the rumors. At first I did, but I’ve gotten to the point where I understand that comes with this lifestyle,” she added.
