Chico Buarque is expected to receive more than R$4 million in a copyright lawsuit

Three publishers stopped paying royalties to the singer

Chico Buarque is expected to receive more than R$4 million owed by three publishing houses in a copyright lawsuit. With a decision dated September 18, the Court of São Paulo established the payment of compensation to Chico and his company within 15 days.

The publishing houses involved are Três Marias Editora Musical, Editora Musical Arlequim and Trevo Editora Musical. The information and details about the trial come from the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo.

According to what Chico’s lawyer claims, the action began to request the termination of the copyright assignment contracts that the singer had with these publishers. “These contracts had as their object the copyright on approximately 37 musical works, and were stipulated between 1965 and 1969”, he specifies.

Publishers have reportedly stopped paying royalties to the composer in recent years. They also would not accept the resolution, which gave rise to the lawsuit. So far the publishers have not commented on the decision.
