The day Keanu Reeves received a bass lesson from Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea

Actor and musician recalled the important (and unusual) advice from the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist

In addition to several works recognized for his performance, Keanu Reeves is also the bassist of dogstara grunge rock band that returned from a 20-year hiatus in 2023. Their two worlds crossed when the actor was on a film set and received a lesson in Fleabassist of Red Hot Chili Peppers. They both acted in the film Call Boys (1991).

On the channel YouTube from theFender, one of the largest and most important manufacturers of guitars, amplifiers and basses in the world, Reeves gave details about the meeting with Flea and his fascination with the four-string instrument.

“Once, I was making a film and the Flea [baixista do Red Hot Chili Peppers] was in it… and there was a house with amplifiers, instruments and things like that”, recalled the artist.

“And I thought, ‘Hey, Flea, can you teach me a lesson?’ And he said, ‘Sure, man!’ It’s him [fez um solo de baixo complexo]. And I thought, ‘Okay, so what?’ And he said, ‘Just feel it, man. Just play.’ And I said, ‘Yes’.”

Talking about how he became a bass player, Keanu said: “I think I’m a wild animal playing with a piece of wood. I didn’t learn many songs. I didn’t listen to a song and try to figure it out. Children: I’m sorry about that. If you’re learning an instrument, it’s cool to find out what people have done before, but I wasn’t doing that. So I would just play. So I had no theory.

This only changed in the early 1990s when Robert Mailhouse in a supermarket, who was wearing a hockey uniform. During their chat, they discovered that they also liked music and decided to form a rock band, inviting Bret Domrose (guitarist) for Dogstar.

In total, Dogstar released two studio albums: Our Little Visionary (1996) and Happy Ending (2000) and in July the trio released “Everything Turns Around”the first new song after 23 years.
