On the This Is Not A Drill tour, Roger Waters was accused of anti-Semitism – and his show was banned in Germany
Due to a banned show in Frankfurt, Germany, Roger Watersformer member of pink Floydwas the target of criticism when he announced shows in Brazil in 2023. He will sing in Brasília (October 24), Rio de Janeiro (October 28), Porto Alegre (November 1), Curitiba (November 4), Belo Horizonte ( November 8) and São Paulo (November 11).
What happened to Waters in Germany? The country’s city council banned the artist’s show on the tour This Is Not A Drill for considering him anti-Semitic. After he contested the decision, administrative magistrates in Frankfurt decided to allow the show. As The Guardian reported, some elements of the singer’s performances were considered “in bad taste,” with some symbolism inspired by the regime of Nazi Germany.
However, this same court decided to allow the production to maintain the artistic freedom of Waters. According to the judges, the show “does not glorify or relativize Nazi crimes, or identify with Nazi racist ideology.” It is worth highlighting how Frankfurt city council can still appeal the decision.
When did this happen, Israeli Confederation of Brazil (Conib) It is Holocaust Memorial Institute (IMH) requested that the Brazilian government prevent the tour of Waters in the country – and a huge discussion about censorship began.
Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flavio Dino revealed how he did not receive a petition regarding the apology for Nazism. The politician also explained how the possibility of prior censorship was not in the plans, and was based on the Constitution.
“Depending on our Constitutionit is a general rule that administrative authorities cannot carry out PRIOR censorship, and it is possible for the Judiciary to intervene in the event of a THREAT of harm to the rights of people or communities,” he wrote.
I still haven’t received a petition about an apology for Nazism that would take place at a musical show. When I receive it, I will analyze it, calmly and prudently, based on two fundamental premises:
1. According to our Constitution, it is a general rule that administrative authorities cannot do…
