The Beatles’ last song will have a video from the director of “The Lord of the Rings”

The Beatles’ long-awaited “last song”, titled “Now and Then”, will receive a special video, directed by none other than Peter Jackson, from the “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies.

Jackson recently signed on for the documentary series “The Beatles: Get Back,” about the recording of the band’s latest album. In a statement, he described the clip, which will be released on Friday (11/3), as “touching and funny, inviting viewers to celebrate the Beatles’ timeless and enduring love for each other.”

Technical Renaissance

“Now and Then” was composed by John Lennon shortly before his death in 1980. In the following decade, McCartney received the demo tape of the song, as a gift from his widow Yoko Ono. He worked on the song with George Harrison and Ringo Starr, but the result was not good enough to be released.

In 2023, after seeing how AI helped Jackson color and complete the material for “Get Back”, McCartney returned to work on the recording and, with the help of the other surviving Beatle, drummer Ringo Starr, has finished the song, which will be officially launched on Thursday (2/11) with the participation of the four members of the group.

The song has piqued fans’ curiosity since McCartney revealed that John Lennon’s voice was saved through technology, but without artificial recreations. “Nothing was created artificially or synthetically. It’s all real and we all play with it,” the musician said.

Released in multiple versions

The track will have digital and physical releases on vinyl and cassette. In the disc version, “Now and Then” will be a “double single”, accompanied by a remix of “Love Me Do”, the group’s first song from 1962, which represents a “true full circle”.

In addition to the song, a 12-minute behind-the-scenes documentary of the recording will be released on November 1st, followed by a clip for “Now and Then”, available November 3rd.

The track will also integrate the update of two of the most famous Beatles compilations, “The Beatles 1962-1966” and “The Beatles 1967-1970”, which will be expanded with new songs and mixes in their re-release.
