After being in contention and losing the rooster role, Powell spoke about the important advice that the best gun Star gave him the role of fighter pilot which he almost gave up.
Glen Powell gave details of Tom Cruise’s ways of persuasion during cinemacon . In addition to hosting the high-flying sequel, Powell received the Male Star of Tomorrow award at the event for his starring role as resident bad boy, Lieutenant Jake “Hangman” Seresin. But the moment hardly happened after Miles Teller was cast to play “Rooster” Bradshaw. Despite him losing the role, Cruise saw something in hidden numbers star and insisted he join the film. Powell explained how the megastar convinced him to take on the role as follows:
I first auditioned for the role of Rooster, which went to Miles Teller, who smoked it. And when you see this movie, you realize it was a perfect cast. At the time, it was a bit of an ego shot, which is fine for Top Gun. I will say this is really a testament to Jerry, Joe and Tom of how they would get me for it. Because I wasn’t sure if I would, and then they showed me [that] Aerial shots, test shots and then I was able to sit in a room with Tom for a few hours.
Sitting in a cinema watching aerial shots with the Mission Impossible star would impress any young star. In the case of Glen Powell, he, like millions of young children, grew up admiring Tom Cruise and his astronomical film success. He wanted the same career path as the box office star. I was pretty sure how I chose the films and what I wanted to do, and then Tom left me speechless at how he built his career. … he said, ‘What kind of career do you want, Glen?’ I was like, ‘You, man, I want to be you.’ And then he said, ‘How do you think he got here?’ And I was like, ‘Pick the good parts.’ He said, “No, Glen, I choose great FILMS and then I make great ARTICLES”. it’s true Joe [Kosinski] I just saw my mind melt and thought, “Damn, this guy is good.” I had to take a leap of faith about what Hangman’s role would be and I have to say that these guys have kept every promise they promised.
This is the power of Tom Cruise. I could convince any actor to accept a project, especially if he’s undecided. Fortunately, Glen Powell took the Top Gun: Maverick role and changed her career with real box office success. Being on set with Cruise was infectious for the actor with his go-go-go attitude. Sure, he had to change his name due to an Air Force and Navy mistake, but overall he got involved after taking on the bad boy role.
