Spoiler ahead for the flight. 1 of Strange things Season 4 on Netflix.
If a fan of Strange things I doubted the show could get darker after the gruesome and murderous first three seasons, so the first volume of season four must have been a rude awakening. The new villain Vecna (included The look was inspired by game of Thrones night king ) doesn’t even need to leave the Upside Down to kill his victims, tormenting them in their minds as he uses his powers to crack their bones, gouge out their eyes, and brutally kill them to create gates for Hawkins. . Sound played a big part in the horror of murder, with chief sound effects editor Angelo Palazzo revealing the startling sources of the disturbing sounds.
Angelo Palazzo spoke to Gossipify about Season 4, sharing delightfully unexpected sources for Demo-Bat sounds . Not everything has been pleasant in the season for the characters of Strange things, however, as I noticed, the subtitles included audio descriptions that included “bone popping” and “wet squelch”. The senior sound effects editor revealed how the team came up with the right sounds for Vecna’s kills, saying:
With bones, let’s go through a few iterations. I made my first recordings with this one where, as I said, I always try to start with organic real world sounds that are familiar to us, but I do them in a certain way and present them in a completely foreign context, so it’s still recorded. So I made a whole recording of stringy cabbage tapes where I was twisting vegetables. I would also wrap them in a damp cloth, to make the skin and bones feel like they are breaking under the skin. So I made a whole bunch of celery, peppers, cabbage. Cabbage was one of the best, as it looks like sinew.
Will anyone else look at their vegetables a little differently after learning that one of Netflix’s biggest shows used products to create some of the scariest sound effects? Cabbage is apparently a great choice for the sound of bones breaking under the skin when wrapped in a damp cloth and wrung out, not to mention the sound of the tendons. Fans may not have thought of cabbage, celery, or peppers when they saw characters like Chrissy die to their gruesome (or scary) deaths. that Max would have met the same fate when Vecna captured her ), but the audio equipment was unexpectedly scary.
It wasn’t just cabbage, and the pops came from different vegetables. Angelo Palazzo went on to explain the sources of the audio of the Vecna murders, also admitting that the end result was “disturbing”. He said:
But then for the broken bones, it was a lot of carrots and celery. I just built a huge library of a lot of new blood and stuff. Then it was really a process of kindly cropping and processing it to be very aggressive and creepy, because when I first saw that scene … I was disturbed. I was like, ‘This is where we’re going! All right!’
Being bothered by the deaths in a show that has already been three full seasons is a sign of a great job done by the sound department, and Angelo Palazzo was very creative in building the new gore library. for everyone people who have been killed over the years in this show, none of them died like those killed by Vecna, starting with Chrissy. Furthermore, Palazzo clarified that the work in Strange things it was funny, even if it was also creepy. He specified:
I mean, it’s fun for a sound effects editor. [and] sound designer. It’s great to create these sounds, edit them and use them. There were plenty of them for the season, especially with all the Creel and Vecna vines. If you notice, his body is still moving with something slippery and slimy. We have done a lot of things from the beginning. The bats were so funny. It was nice to have a new creature to work with.
Overall, Vecna was a terrifying successor to previous season villains like Mind Flayer and Demogorgon. He also has a terrifying origin story, as he was once human before he was banished backwards by the young Eleven, having slaughtered nearly all Hawkins Labs in one. Prosthetic makeup artist Barrie Gower explained the process transforms actor Jamie Campbell Bower into Vecna through practical effects and the finished product is enough to keep fans a lot worried about the nanny waiting for the flight. of them.
Fortunately, the wait for volume 2 of the Strange things (opens in a new tab) is rather short compared to the wait for season 4 after the release of the third season in 2019. netflix subscribers You can watch the final two episodes of Season 4 starting Friday, July 1st at 12:01 am PDT on the streaming service.
