As a fan of his work on both Complaint the evil Bughuul e the black phone Grabber asked the director for the key to creating a horror villain that could carry an entire movie. Derrickson shared his point of view by saying:

I really think the mystery is the key, the mystery. Bughuul is very mysterious. He never talks and you don’t really understand what it is until Sinister ends. And even then, you don’t fully understand it. But look at the big and iconic villains: Heath Ledger’s Joker, Hannibal Lector. These are characters who don’t have a story. You don’t know why I’m the way I am.

He is definitely right. Although there have been countless horror films over the years, some franchises go to great lengths to reveal an adequate story and motivation for the killer. But ultimately, some of the scariest villains in the movies are the ones with no motivation. Furthermore Heath Ledger’s The Joker and Anthony Hopkins’ Hannibal Lector, the killers of Foreigners also come to mind as a good example.

Somehow the bad guys of Complaint Yes the black phone it couldn’t be more different. The first is a demonic presence, while the masked Ethan Hawke black phone The antagonist is a normal human being. Yet, strange doctor Director Scott Derrickson he was careful to methodically approach each villain and their lack of history.

During our own chat, Scott Derrickson went into more detail as to why the lack of background helped. host the shows Heath Ledger and Anthony Hopkins as Joker and Hannibal Lector respectively. As he says,

If the Dark Knight had really told us the truth about ‘How do you think he got these scars? Do you want to know how I got these scars? If he really told us the true story, it would be a lot less threatening, it would be a lot less scary. If there was a scene in The Silence of the Lambs where we were told “That’s why Hannibal Lector eats people”, he’d be less scary. So I think you have to have a real mystery and trust the mystery of a character who behaves abominably.

With no moral compass or concrete story to hold on to, these antagonists become agents of chaos. And there are few things scarier than someone you can’t predict. With the black phonewhat makes the interactions of the young protagonist Finney terrifying with Ethan Hawke’s Grabber all the more tense.

Scott Derrickson rounded out our conversation on horror villains by offering another piece of advice to horror fans and filmmakers alike: stay in the present, instead of dwelling on the past. like him Exorcism of Emily Rose explained the director

And so the key is this: to make them interesting, fascinating in the present. Make them dangerous, horrible in the present. But then be prepared to ignore the typical development of films and try to explain why they are the way they are. Let them be mysterious.

Play. The best portrayals of villains are not about what happened before the action in the film, but during it. And the careful use of these masked characters to terrify heroes and audiences is the real way to create tension in any film. And that tension takes on added power when the villain’s intentions are a mystery.
