Brazil plans imposition on the international film industry and announces measures

During a panel at Ventana Sur, Brazilians highlighted initiatives to promote international co-productions

O Ventana Sur, an event dedicated to the audiovisual market, started this Monday, the 27th, and continues until Friday, the 1st, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. During the panel “Overview of the Brazilian Audiovisual Industry and Collaboration Opportunities with São Paulo”, the speakers highlighted that Brazil is interested in “international co-productions” (via Variety).

Investment

According to André Ricardo Araújo Virgins, general coordinator of the National Audiovisual Secretariat, the Paulo Gustavo Law distributed in May this year R$ 2.8 billion to various audiovisual sectors across the country. São Paulo, for example, received R$300 million, according to Liliana Croccocoordinator of the São Paulo cultural promotion unit.

The southeastern state is now managing an incentive of R$8 million to attract international filming to São Paulo, with the offer of discounts of 20% to 30% of qualified expenses limited to R$3.2 million, it said Luiz Toledo, director of investments and strategic partnerships at Spcine.

Plans

“We are in a time of change, continuous change, of reconstruction, which means that we are resuming initiatives that were interrupted in recent years,” he said Virgins.

Brazil is participating in an initiative that plans an agreement between Mercosur countries to promote co-productions: “If everything goes well, this agreement will be signed by the presidents at the Mercosur Summit next week, in record time”, he continued.

João Roni, partner at the production company Ocean Films, also highlighted that “Brazil is behind many smaller countries due to the size of the domestic market”. He added: “We have a responsibility to grow, with our infrastructures, attentive to business opportunities.”
