The granting of the honor was among the demands of the 2022 “Anti-racist Charter”.
OR University Council of the State University of Campinas (Consu/Unicamp) approved, last Tuesday, the 28th, the awarding of the title of ‘honorary doctor’ to the musicians of Racionais MC’s.
According to Unicamp, Bro Brown, Ice Blue, Edi Rock and KL Jaymembers of the Racionais, were recognized as “public intellectuals who dialogue with Brazilian social thought”.
“The honor also highlights his political performance in the fight against racism and social violence in the country, highlighting the social criticism included in his production,” Consu underlined.
The concession was one of the demands proposed in the “Anti-racist Letter” written in 2022 by students and teachers of the subject “Special topics of anthropology IV: MC racionais in Brazilian social thought”.
Maximum distinction
The title of “doctor honoris causa” is the highest honor provided for by the Unicamp statute since the foundation of the University.
At least 31 personalities have already received the honor, including professors Paulo Freire and Antonio Candido, the poet Mário Quintana, the economist Celso Furtado and the architect Oscar Niemeyer.
Two groups can be considered:
- People who have contributed, in a notable way, to the progress of science, literature or the arts;
- People who have brought outstanding benefits to humanity or provided relevant services to the University.
Mandatory reading
In November 2022, Racionais MC held an open class at Unicamp. The book Surviving hell From the 2020 edition it is mandatory reading for the university entrance exam.
“The Racionais MC extrapolate the discourse of the ghetto, without abandoning it. They do not limit themselves to daily news, but reveal it. They interpret Brazil from another place, for too long perceived as an object of reflection and not as the subject of The Racionais MC are at alongside the great performers of Brazil, and beyond: their lyrics and songs dialogue with a history of struggle against slavery, racism and the terrible inequalities that accompany the experience of the black diaspora”, underlined the teachers in the course title proposal document.
