Damon Albarn returns to Brazil without Blur, but with Africa Express

Africa Express will come to Brazil for the first time and, in addition to Damon Albarn, will feature names like Luedji Luna and Moonchild Sanelly

Damon Albarn will return to Brazil, but not with the band that the fans who expected him in Primavera Sound São Paulo they wanted. The vocalist of Blur It’s from Gorillaz will come with the first Africa Express in South America, on February 23, 2024.

Other attractions already confirmed are: Badsista, Hak Baker, Imarhan, Jupiter & Okwess, Luedji Luna, Moonchild Sanelly, Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) It is Vhoor. There are musicians from different parts of the world who come together with Afro-Brazilian artists, thus highlighting the connection through the African diaspora, dance, movement and culture of everyone involved. Africa Express

It was in 2006, during a trip to Mali, in West Africa that it all started. Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz), Martha Wainwright and Fatboy Slim met with local stars like Toumani Diabaté, Bassekou Kouyaté It is Amadou & Mariam and it was from this extraordinary meeting that the Africa Express. The following year, in 2007, the collective’s first public event was held, with a legendary five-hour show at Glastonbury Festival, which was described by The Times as “an absolute epiphany for everyone who was there”.

And in almost 20 years of history, the Africa Express developed creativity and collaboration in music and cultivated an audience as diverse as the musicians and artists who are part of its history. It is a creative and multicultural ecosystem that, in each show and also in studio recordings, brings together musicians, singers and DJs from regions such as Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Algeria, South Africa and Mali with artists and producers from the United Kingdom , United States and Europe (via Eventim).
