Kanye West recently released a new song that samples the Backstreet Boys’ hit “Everybody.” However, the website TMZ revealed on Tuesday (12/12) that the artist did not obtain permission from the group to use it in the album “Vultures”, which is scheduled for release on Friday (12/15).
Sources close to the band claim that “Kanye was unable to get the collective OK from Nick, Kevin, Howie, Brian, AJ and their team to use the 1997 classic.” It’s also unclear whether “Kanye reached out and was denied use of the track or whether he simply never asked.”
The lack of permission didn’t stop the rapper from posting the new version on social media as part of the new album’s tracklist, as well as playing it at project listening events in Miami, US.
At the moment it is unclear whether the song will remain on the Vultures album, created in collaboration with Ty Dolla Sign. The project has 18 tracks with features from Future, Quavo, Lil Baby, Nicki Minaj, among others.
