One of the great names of bossa nova, singer and composer Carlos Lyra he died in the early hours of this Saturday, the 16th, in Rio de Janeiro. He was admitted to the Unimed Barra hospital, in the west of the city. Carlos Lyra was 90 years old. His cause of death was not reported.

According to his wife, Magda Pereira Botafogo, informed g1, the composer was hospitalized with fever on Thursday 14th at the Unimed Hospital, in Barra da Tijuca. After some tests a bacterium was detected.

“It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of the composer Carlos Lyra, this morning, unexpectedly. We thank everyone for your kindness”, reads a post on the artist’s Instagram profile.

Carlos Lyra’s career

One of the main partners of Vinicio de Moraes, Lyra is the author of compositions that contributed to the formation of bossa nova, such as “Você e Eu” and “Coisa Mais Linda”. Lyra’s first composition was “Menino”, recorded with the vocals of Silvia Telles, in 1956. In 1959 he released his first album, entitled “Bossa nova”. In the same year, Joao Gilberto records “Maria tomorrow” and “Lobo bobo”, from Lyra’s collaboration with Ronaldo Boscoli.

The singer and songwriter on social media Gilberto Gil lamented the loss and posted a video of “Saudade faz um Samba,” by Lyra and Bôscoli, performed last Thursday at the Brazilian Academy of Letters.

Carlos Lyra’s body will rest on Sunday 17th, from 10am to 2pm, in the Memorial do Carmo, in Caju. The ceremony will be reserved for relatives and friends.
