The musician was part of the original lineup, but was the first to leave the band, after feeling ill during a show due to alcohol
The drummer Colin Burgess He died this Saturday, aged 16, at the age of 77. He was part of the original lineup of AC DCalong with guitarists Angus Young and Malcolm Young, bassist Larry Van Kriedt and singer Dave Evans.
“Very sad to hear of the passing of Colin Burgess. He was our first drummer and a highly respected musician. Happy memories. Rock in peace, Colin,” the group said in a statement posted on Instagram.
Colin Burgess came to AC/DC after being part of the group The Masters Apprentices, and had a short stint, only between 1973 and 1974. According to the book AC/DC: Hell is not a bad place to be, written by Mick Wall, the reason for his departure from the band was said to be the day he felt ill on stage and did not complete a show after drinking an alcoholic beverage. Look at the extract from the work that reports the case:
“The band went through the first of its many line-up changes when Colin Burgess was sacked after collapsing on stage at Checkers. According to Burgess, his drink had been ‘spiked’, causing him to fall face-down on the floor in the middle of a musical number. He admits to having “had a few drinks” that evening, but insists he was not drunk.
He bought a drink before the show and then stayed there for half an hour to check the drums and get ready. When he returned, he simply took the glass and drank it in one gulp. When he came on stage, “my head was like, ‘Whooh-ooh-ooh-ooh.’ I was surprised. I thought I was going to melt. I beat the drums and kept playing until I fell to the ground.’
He had to carry it off stage. According to Dave Evans, “Ten minutes or so later, Malcolm came to me and informed me that he had taken [Colin Burgess] of the band’.
Colin was a pop star in the 1960s and often arrived at shows with a woman on each arm. I thought it was great, but Angus and Malcolm were talking behind your back. They called him “rockstar”, “popstar”. They were, he says, simply “very, very jealous of Colin”.
