becomes Elizabeth debuted on Starz to give a new take on the stories of the Tudor monarchs. The historical drama focuses on the future Queen Elizabeth I, when she was only the daughter of Anne Boleyn and the third in line of succession to the throne after the death of King Henry VIII. Newly orphaned, Princess Elizabeth (Alice von Rittberg) is placed under the “protection” of Catherine Parr (Jessica Raine) and Thomas Seymour (Tom Cullen). from fall of the knights ), but it soon becomes clear in the series that they have their own goals in mind. Cullen spoke to Gossipify about the “Jedi spirit trick” he used to play his character, as well as Seymour’s priorities.
Elizabeth I is remembered in the centuries following her death as the virgin queen who never married, but becomes Elizabeth shows a young woman open to romance when it comes to the attentions of handsome (and much older) Thomas Seymour, who appears to be married to his ex-mother-in-law. She shared her approach to playing the fascinating and dangerous sides of her character with teenage Elizabeth:
Well, when I first read the scripts, I think what really struck me was the complexity of all the characters. This show exists a lot in gray and there is very little in black and white. I think Thomas in particular is very, very gray in the sense that he is very complex. In a way I wanted to lean on that, and I had to do a Jedi mind joke on myself during the shoot, and really make him the hero of the show. In my head, I renamed it “Elizabeth and I”, thinking it really was a show about Thomas, his story and his rise to power. So I had to justify everything he did. Otherwise you judge the character too much. So yeah, I wanted the audience to really like it, so that when things got a little more complex, they feel like they’re on the same path as Elizabeth.
Viewers can watch becomes Elizabeth as an adaptation of the years of Elizabeth I after the death of her father, surviving the reign of her little brother the king and becoming the woman who would become queen, but Tom Cullen had to think of the series as Seymour would: a story about him. At this point in the story, Elizabeth is really more of a pawn than a helpless player, and Cullen made it easy to see why a girl would respond to his attention.
Alicia von Rittberg’s performance as Elizabeth also convinces of the character’s infatuation with him, a sign that the series has found the right actress to embody the future queen. despite his initial belief that there was an error in his hearing ! Since the beginning of the series, the various characters have different plots and priorities in the passage of power from Henry VIII to Edward, with the Catholic Sister Mary and the Protestant Sister Elizabeth. What are Thomas Seymour’s priorities right now? Tom Cullen spoke:
I think his priorities change from how he gets up in the morning, to be honest. I think your priorities are quite simple. He wants to get out of his brother’s shadow and I think everything he does is very much connected to that. Yes, this is definitely his big push. The series has made it clear that the two Seymour brothers are not cut from the same cloth, and it remains to be seen if Thomas can get more power for himself … and how Elizabeth will be involved in all of this. Viewers who know their story know they certainly won’t get married and leave at sunset to live happily ever after, but that still leaves plenty of room for complications.
