The Berlin Film Festival announced this Thursday (21/12) that its 74th edition will award an honorary prize to Martin Scorsese. Organizers of the German festival have selected the veteran American filmmaker as the 2024 honoree of a Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement.
The 81-year-old director, known for such classics as “Taxi Driver” and “Raging Bull,” will be honored Feb. 20 in a special ceremony. In a statement, organizers highlighted Scorsese’s latest film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” as one of his greatest successes, proving that the director remains innovative. “For those who see cinema as the art of shaping a story in a way that is both entirely personal and universal at the same time, Martin Scorsese is an incomparable model,” said festival directors Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian.
One of the most influential directors of his generation, Scorsese has a career spanning five decades. Born in 1942 in New York, he began to stand out in the 1970s, an era known as “New Hollywood”, in which diverse talents emerged and reshaped American cinema. His film “Taxi Driver,” released in 1976, not only won critical acclaim but also became a cultural touchstone, establishing the director as a master in exploring complex themes such as urban alienation and disturbed psychology. His frequent collaborations with actor Robert De Niro, starting with “Dangerous Roads” (1973) and including such masterpieces as “Raging Bull” (1980) and “Goodfellas” (1990), cemented his reputation as a visionary director. singular.
