Learn tips for using flashing lights without hurting your electric bill or putting your home at risk
Christmas has already arrived and the traditional twinkling lights are already invading homes, businesses and streets. Even with all the beauty and magic that Christmas decorations offer, it is necessary to stay pay attention to electricity consumption, safety and look for alternatives that help you save on your electricity bill.
With this in mind, Elgin-based battery specialist and product manager Douglas Muniz has put together four tips for keeping the Christmas spirit alive and well. Look down.
Decorations on the model with electric extension
Consumers should be careful when purchasing Christmas decorations. We recommend purchasing products that comply with INMETRO ordinance n. 497 of 13 December 2021, which establishes mandatory information for low voltage electrical devices available on the market. Therefore, the packaging must contain details such as voltage, current, maximum power of the appliance, name and brand or logo of the manufacturer or importer.
1- Pay attention to the power (W) of the ornament
While you are still in the process of choosing your flashing lights, check the information relating to watts (W) on the packaging, which corresponds to the power required by the product. “The higher the power, the higher the consumption of the Christmas decoration. Also, remember that the longer it is used and there are more lamps, the higher the energy consumption,” explains the specialist from Elgin.
2- Products with LED technology
According to the Foundation for Electric Energy Saving (FIDE), the use of household appliances and flashing lights can increase consumption by up to 30%. Products with LED lamps are low consumption and highly efficient light sources. “Compared to other models, they consume up to 80% less consumption than a common lamp, with a longer useful life,” explains Muniz.
3- Operating time
To save energy during this period, the ideal is not to leave the lights on for a long time. “The best time is between 7pm and 11pm. Also, keep the lights off while the house is empty or the inhabitants are sleeping,” emphasizes the Elgin specialist.
4- Battery-powered models and which type is the best
There are low-power models and many battery-powered models. “Decorative lights have a high energy consumption. Therefore, the most recommended are alkaline batteries; thanks to their composition, they have a longer life. However, if the device is used very frequently, rechargeable batteries are the best solution, especially those of NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride), since it has a greater charging capacity, furthermore, it does not contain cadmium and does not develop the memory effect”, underlines Muniz.
