The Samba plot ‘Ask for cashews I’ll give you… Cashews they’ll give you’ dates back to ancient carnivals and references Brazilian culture and even Luiz Inácio
Spotify Viral Rio has a surprise this Wednesday 3. The samba plot of Mocidade Independente by Padre Miguel, Ask for cashews and I’ll give you… Cashew stalks and I’ll give them to you! reached first place in the rankings. With this, samba-enredo surpassed funk and reached the Top 1 on Spotify Viral Rio with the composition of Marcelo Adnet; surpassing names like MC Cabelinho.
The samba plot was published in June 2022, signed by the comedian Marcelo Adnet with Diego Nicolau, Paulinho Mocidade, Richard and Cabeça do Ajax. The lyrics refer to Brazilian modernism, with the anthropophagic movement and quotes from it Tarsila do Amaral, sing about cashews.
Alceu Valença AND Caetano Veloso they are also mentioned in the verses: “È tropicália, tropicana, cajuína/For the intact retina, the star in the gaze”, in memory of the text of Bruna Tropicana AND Cashew nuts, respectively. A veneration for the original peoples is also noted in: “There Tupi in the interior of cafundó/ A quiprocó became a supposed war/ Provou Porã (Provou!), fruit on the tree”.
A play on “Luiz Inácio” is also present in the lyrics. “In this land where greatness is a document / I will build a monument to Luiz Inácio.” Coincidentally, the person responsible for planting the largest cashew in the world in 1888 was a fisherman called Luiz Inácio, the same name as the current president.
The track harks back to 90s carnivals, with lighter lyrics. The samba-enredo was one of the most listened to songs during New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro.
Composer
This is not the first time Adnet has chosen to become a composer. The comedian had already ventured into the samba plots of schools such as São Clemente and Acadêmicos do Sossego, in Niterói, in collaboration with other composers. In the São Clemente parade, in 2020, he also appeared on the float making a parody of the former president Jair Bolsonaro.
