Theobald Lengyel was considered a suspect from the beginning of the investigation after he refused to cooperate with the police in the search for Alice Herrman
Theobald Lengyel, 54, a former member of the 1980s experimental rock band Mr. Bungle, has been arrested and charged with killing his missing girlfriend, Alice Herrmann, 61. His body was found this week in a forest in Berkeley, California, US.
“Investigators recovered human remains in a wooded area within Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley,” the Capitola Police Department said in a statement. “Identification of the remains is pending DNA confirmation from the Contra County Medical Examiner’s Office,” he added. The police have not yet reached a conclusion on how Alice was killed and the reasons that led to the crime.
According to the newspaper New York PostLengyel had already been considered a suspect after he refused to cooperate with police in his girlfriend’s disappearance. Alice was last seen alive on December 3. From the beginning of the investigation, on the 12th of the same month, the police stated that “a crime was involved” in the case.
After Alice’s disappearance, Lengyel would spend the next few days driving. He would have traveled 600 km. While the musician was away, police found Alice’s car parked in front of her home, located just 5 miles north of Berkeley.
He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail on a first-degree murder charge without bail. He was also charged with robbery and car theft.
Lengyel played saxophone, clarinet and keyboards in the rock band Mr. Bungle. Although the band still performs today, he left the group in the 1990s after disagreements with other members.
