Warner Bros. has released a new trailer for the musical version of “The Color Purple.” The preview highlights praise for the production, but only includes sentences from obscure sources. The initiative is bizarre, given that the film has an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and favorable reviews from established publications.
The new version of “The Color Purple” is based on the 2005 Broadway musical, but also takes into account the original book by Alice Walker and the film version by Steven Spielberg (“Schindler’s List”), starring Oprah Winfrey (“A Wrinkle in Time”) and Whoopi Goldberg (“Change of Habit”) in 1985. The original drama received 10 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture. The plot portrays racism in the American South, machismo, patriarchy, friendship, love and educational deficiencies, among other provocative themes. The facts are exposed in the letters that the protagonist Celie writes to God and to her sister, but they are never sent.
The new version features singer Fantasia Barrino, who was revealed in the third season of “American Idol” (aired in 2004) and played the title role on Broadway. Additionally, Halle Bailey (“The Little Mermaid”) plays the younger version of her sister Nettie, while Taraji P. Henson (“Counting Money”) plays Shug, lover of her abusive husband, played by Colman Domingo (“Fear the Walking Dead “). The cast also includes Corey Hawkins (“New York City”), Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“King Richard: Making Champions”), Danielle Brooks (“Peacemaker”), who received a Tony nomination for her performance in a production of Broadway in 2016, the singer Ciara in the role of the adult Nettie and the singers Jean Baptiste and HER in their acting debut.
The work is directed by Blitz Bazawule (who wrote part of Beyoncé’s “Black Is King” visual album) and written by Marcus Gardley (“The Chi”). Furthermore, the production reunites Steven Spielberg, presenter Oprah Winfrey (who made her acting debut in the 1985 film) and musician Quincy Jones, all partners in the first version of the film.
The film is already screening in North America, but will only arrive in Brazil on February 8th.
