Singer revealed that she “lost her mind” when she learned that “Standing in the Way of Control” had been used in promotional material for a British teen series in 2007
On the eve of the launch of Real Poweran album that marks the end of the band’s 11-year hiatus. Gossip, Beth Ditto recalled the use of one of the band’s songs in the series Skins. “I’ve never watched this series,” said the singer in an interview with NME.
Originally broadcast in 2007 on the British channel E4, the teen drama told the story of a group of friends still in their teens as they matured, relationships, (lots of) parties and substance use. “Standing in the Way of Control”the success of Gossip’s first self-titled album, was used in promotional material for the first season of the series (below), becoming a kind of unofficial soundtrack for the program.
Asked about how the song ended up in the promotion of SkinsDitto said that the decision never came from the group: “The owner of the label placed [a música] in the series”. According to the singer, her first reaction was indignation and surprise when she heard the name of the program:
“When I heard the name of the show, I lost my mind, because ‘skins’ meant skinhead. So I was like, ‘What the f*ck is this?’ But then I learned what it meant in the series. I got lost in translation.”
Confronted about the possibility of having a Gossip song on the soundtrack of a far-right fascist program, Beth Ditto confirmed that she lost her patience:
“The first thing I thought was, ‘Who thought of this? Whose idea was it? It drove me crazy, I was so angry. It’s a teen drama, but what is it about?'”
Created by Bryan Elsley It is Jamie Brittain, Skins would gain cult status by openly addressing adolescence dramas that did not gain space on TV at the time, such as depression, post-traumatic disorder, death, sexuality and eating disorders. The series was responsible for the projection of names such as Nicholas Hoult, Hannah Murray, Kaya Scodelario, Joe Dempsie, Dev Patel It is Daniel Kaluuya. It aired for six seasons until 2012, with a final season featuring the epilogue of some characters in 2013.
New Gossip album
Real Power, Gossip’s new album, is scheduled for release on March 22nd. The first single from the album, “Crazy Again”was released on November 17, 2023 and the second, “Real Power”comes out this Friday, the 19th.

Made by Rick Rubinthe album brings together Beth Ditto (vocal), Nathan Howdeshell (various instruments) and Hanah Blilie (battery). The band hasn’t released new material since A Joyful Noisefrom 2012. In February 2016, the vocalist announced the end of the trio and launched a solo career, with the debut album Fake Sugar (2017).
It was Rick Rubin who encouraged the band to reunite and start recording again after celebrating the album’s 10th anniversary. Music For Men with a tour in 2019.
