Rui Motta, former Mutantes drummer, died last Wednesday (17/1) at the age of 72, with no cause yet known. The information was shared on the musician’s official Instagram profile.
The artist gained national recognition by playing with important names in Brazilian popular music, such as Erasmo Carlos, Marina Lima, Moraes Moreira, Sá and Guarabyra, as well as Ney Matogrosso, Zé Ramalho and Steve Hackett (guitarist of the English band Genesis).
Motta’s wake began this Thursday morning (18/1), in chapel 7 of the São João Bastista cemetery, in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. The funeral is scheduled to begin at 3.30 pm.
About the artist
Born in Niterói, Rui Motta began his musical career at just 13 years old and, at 15, he was already working on small events and radio and television programs in the 1960s.
In 1973, the artist quickly gained prominence and joined Mutantes in the band’s post-tropical phase, which further increased his projection in the music industry. He was twice elected drummer of the year by Rock magazine, in a public vote.
Despite having worked with several important names in the scene, Motta embarked on a solo career and recorded four albums: “Mundos Paralelos”, “Rui Motta”, “Sinestesia” and “Ilusão Motriz”.
Since 2020, Rui has dedicated himself to the music school he founded in Rio de Janeiro, where he also taught drums through an exclusive workshop program.
