The choice made by the former Van Halen singer focuses on work that, in his view, “never gets old”
Sammy Hagar became known to the general public as the second vocalist of Van Halen. He took over the vacancy left by David Lee Roth between 1985 and 1996. In a second stint, he was in the band between 2003 and 2005. His work with the group, in addition to commercial and critical recognition, made him join the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.
But his career is not limited to this period. Hagar released several solo albums, in addition to being part of Montrose in the 1970s and developed projects such as Chickenfoot, The Circle and HSAS. And his range of influences is also not limited to hard rock through which he became known worldwide.
In a 2022 interview with Spin (via website Igor Miranda), Sammy was asked to share five albums he can’t live without. His list was relatively eclectic, with works ranging from American funk to metal. But one of the albums mentioned is a definitive rock classic: The Dark Side of the Moonresponsible for raising the pink Floyd to stardom in 1973.
When commenting on your choice for Dark Side, Hagar declared:
“Why? Because it never gets old. That’s why I love him. After all these years, when I listen to it, it still raises the artistic and creative bar for me. It makes me say to myself: ‘I haven’t managed it yet’. It’s so deep that it doesn’t need any further explanation, right?”
Following his argument, Sammy recalled the period in which he recorded the first work of his career: the debut album by Montrosereleased in October 1973. At that time, The Dark Side of the Moon He was his faithful companion.
“While I was recording the first album of MontroseI listened ‘Money‘ on the radio and the entire album poolside on a cassette player with headphones. She wished she was in a band like that. And here I was recording the first album of Montrosewhich ended up being my introduction into the world of music with ‘Rock Candy‘, hello!?”
The Pink Floyd drummer’s favorite
Sammy Hagar did not make it clear whether “Money” is his favorite song in The Dark Side of the Moon, but everything leads us to believe that it is. In the case of the drummer himself Pink Floyd, Nick Masonthe song is among his favorites on the album.
In an interview with The Sun (via website Igor Miranda), Mason was asked to reveal the tracks he likes most from the classic 1973 album. He responded:
“Probably [minha favorita] is the introduction of ‘Breathe‘, with those lazy drums and then Dave’s voice coming in. This sets the stage for me. ‘Money‘ is also interesting to play. I really like the way it starts quickly.”
In another part of his statement, the drummer said that he sees Dark Side like a work that is still new, even so much time later. According to him, the band’s intention was to make a good album, but without imagining that it would become one of the best-selling in history, with more than 45 million copies sold worldwide.
“We came from a time when no one thought any rock song would last more than a few weeks. We made the album thinking it was really good, the best thing we had done so far. But we didn’t imagine it would have this repercussion. At that time, we hadn’t made it big in America and we didn’t think that would happen.”
