This true “French blockbuster” starring Pierre Niney will be released in theaters six months early

Pierre Niney is The Count of Monte Cristo

After the lit diptych The Three Musketeers, released in theaters between April and December 2023, Alexandre Dumas’ work will continue to be used on the big screen. Pathé, in fact, has focused on a truly extended universe, with the imminent arrival of the film The Count of Monte Cristo, adapted and directed by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière (the screenwriters of Les Mousquetaires ed.). Once again, they were able to count on a solid cast, starting with Pierre Niney in the main role, and in particular surrounded by Laurent Lafitte, Anaïs Demoustier, Bastien Bouillon and Anamaria Vartolomei.

First published in 1844, this historical novel follows the story of Edmond Dantès, a promising young sailor, whose life is turned upside down when he is falsely accused of treason and imprisoned in the infamous Château d’If. Years of isolation and desperation turn into a quest for revenge after his spectacular escape and the discovery of a priceless treasure left by Father Faria, his cellmate and mentor.

Transformed into the rich and mysterious Count of Monte Cristo, Dantès returns to Parisian society, masking his identity and his past. Using his intelligence, wealth and influence, he sets out to expose and punish those who caused his downfall.

With an estimated budget of between 35 and 40 million euros, and a duration of approximately three hours, The Count of Monte Cristo promises to be the great piece of French cinema of the year 2024. We had already had a small taste of it in a making-of video of the film.

A release in June instead of December

Although the film was scheduled for release in December 2024, Pathé announced that they would be bringing the release forward by six months! We will thus discover Pierre Niney in the role of Edmond Dantès from June 28th. If we ignore the reason for this very exceptional postponement, it could be explained by the disappointing data relating to the second part of the Three Musketeers, released last December, and which did not reach the score of the first part (it currently has 2.4 million viewers, while the first film had exceeded three million). This strategy could prove profitable, as the French public has proven to love these big French-style epic adventures.

With the move to June, we shouldn’t have to wait too long to see the film’s first trailer The Count of Monte Cristo.
